The Ida County Community Betterment Foundation (ICCBF), an affiliate of the Siouxland Community Foundation, recently awarded grants totaling $109,719 to nonprofit organizations in support of projects and programs throughout Ida County.  This brings the total grants awarded to over $1,060,000 since the first grants were made in 2006.

The following grant awards were announced at a special event held at the Legion Hall in Galva, IA:

The ICCBF was formally established in 2005 through affiliation with the Siouxland Community Foundation and is governed by a local ten-member advisory board composed of representatives from each of the five communities in Ida County: Arthur, Battle Creek, Galva, Holstein, and Ida Grove.

The mission of the ICCBF is to promote philanthropy, serve as a vehicle to carry out the charitable objectives of donors, build endowments, identify needs, and make grants for the benefit of the citizens and communities of Ida County.

(Sioux City, IA, January 11, 2018) The Ida County Community Betterment Foundation (ICCBF), an affiliate of the Siouxland Community Foundation, is accepting grant applications from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and units of local government. Since the first grants were awarded in 2006, the ICCBF has awarded over $1M to nonprofit organizations to help support present and emerging needs within Ida County in the areas of arts & culture, civic affairs, education, environment, health, and human services. The ICCBF Advisory Board is well aware that service clubs and organizations have an important role in Ida County. Even though the Foundation can not make grants directly to service clubs or other non-501(c)(3) organizations, those organizations are encouraged to collaborate with a qualified nonprofit agency on projects or seek a fiscal sponsor.

The ICCBF is governed by a local ten-member advisory board composed of representatives from each of the communities in Ida County. Technical assistance and staff support is provided by the Siouxland Community Foundation which currently works with several affiliate Foundations.

Ida County Grant Workshop Tutorial Guide

(Dakota Dunes, SD) Tyson Fresh Meats today announced a $100,000 grant to the Siouxland Community Foundation. The donation will go toward a Siouxland nonprofit capacity building program for hunger relief organizations.

Siouxland Community Foundation partnered with LaSalle University to deliver an eight-month capacity building program. Ten to 12 participating nonprofits will receive 50 hours of instruction, coaching and problem-based consulting services.

“We are so pleased Tyson has funded this capacity building project,” said Rebecca Krohn, executive director of Siouxland Community Foundation. “So often nonprofits need this type of mentoring, but it is cost prohibitive.”

The program targets nonprofit organizations that focus on immigrant services, hunger relief, adult education and language services.

“The Siouxland Community Foundation is proud to partner with Tyson and bring this needed opportunity to several nonprofits serving the Siouxland tri-state region,” said Krohn. “This will strengthen local nonprofits and in return it will benefit those they serve.”

SCF strives to enhance the quality of life in the greater Siouxland area by seeking charitable gifts to build permanent endowments for the community, a safety umbrella to receiving and distributing gifts of any size, contributing investments to community needs, and providing services that will help shape the well-being of Siouxland.

(Wakefield, NE) The Wakefield Community Foundation (WCF), an affiliate of the Siouxland Community Foundation, recently awarded grants totaling $2,000 to four organizations that serve Wakefield.

“Since 2007 when the first grants were awarded, $15,400 has been awarded to support needs in the community that positively impact the quality of life here in Wakefield,” said Laura Dendinger, President of the WCF Board of Directors.

This year, grants were awarded to:

• Graves Park Forever Committee – Phase 4 of landscape project – $500
• The Little Red Hen Theatre – Missoula Children’s Theater – $500
• Wakefield Health Care Center Inc. – Pressure relief and foot protection for wheelchairs – $500
• Wakefield Senior Center – New Copier – $500

(Sioux City, IA) The Karen A. Luken Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 by the Greater Sioux City Press Club to provide assistance for college students pursuing a career in Mass Communication or Journalism.

This year, Ari Lebowitz, a student at Briar Cliff University, has been selected to receive the $1,000 Karen A. Luken Memorial Scholarship from the Greater Sioux City Press Club Scholarship Fund.

(Akron, IA, December 7, 2016) – The Akron Community Foundation (ACF), an affiliate of the Siouxland Community Foundation, is accepting grant applications from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and units of local government that serve the Akron community. The 2017 deadline for submitting an application is February 1.

To date, over $125,000 has been awarded to help address community needs in the areas of arts and culture, civic affairs, education, health, and human services. Priority consideration is given to projects that:
• Enhance the quality of life in Akron.
• Address present and emerging needs.
• Leverage other funds and/or community resources.
• Result in the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
• Are developed in collaboration with other organizations.
• Encourage volunteerism.

The Jonathan David Phillips Performing Arts Scholarship fund was established in 2002 by the family and friends of Jonathan David Phillips (1981-2002). Each year scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000 are awarded to college-bound high school seniors in the Siouxland area who are seeking a career in the performing arts or in the teaching of the performing arts. Since 2003, $18,500 in scholarships have been awarded to 25 high school seniors. The Siouxland Community Foundation began administering this fund in 2016. “Performing arts” includes but is not limited to theatre, music, band, orchestra and dance.

Jonathan David Phillips was born on December 8, 1981, and graduated from South Sioux City High School in 2000. He was one of five valedictorians in his high school class and was Homecoming King his senior year. Throughout his education, Jonathan received numerous academic awards and honors and was active in drama, choir, show choir, band, jazz band, madrigal, Math Olympics, the Quiz Bowl, Odyssey of the Mind, and more. He was attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) at the time of his death and would have graduated in 2004.His first love was musical theatre. He joined the Sioux City Community Theatre Junior Theatre in the fall of 1992. He remained active at the community theatre until 1997 and also received training and had roles at Lamb Theatre. He was also active in the South Sioux City High School drama program and had roles in almost every school production from seventh grade on, culminating with the role of Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music his senior year. In the summer of 1999, he was selected to attend and participated in a theatre program at New York University, New York. Additionally, he was a member of the Jumpstarts/Side Project “ska” band from 1996 to 2000 and sang and played saxophone. He continued to pursue studies in theatre at UNL. He was an active member of the Acacia Fraternity, and in 2001 he wrote, directed, and starred in a melodrama that was produced as a fundraiser by UNL fraternities and sororities. Jonathan passed away in a car accident on May 30, 2002. His life continues to inspire his family and friends today.

(Hawarden, Iowa) – The Hawarden Community Foundation (HCF), an affiliate of the Siouxland Community Foundation, announced at their Celebration of Giving Event $53,548 in community grants. In addition to the grant awards, Ric Porter, Hawarden Community Foundation Board Chair announced a $25,000 matching grant for $1:$1 matching funds for new contributions for Hawarden Regional Healthcare’s capitol campaign to keep healthcare “close to home”.

Charles and Edna Horton were longtime residents of Hawarden. As was stated in a news article following the announcement of the Hawarden Community Fund, “Charles and Edna were generous, caring people who loved Hawarden, and wanted to give something back for the good life they enjoyed there.” “They chose the Foundation at the vehicle to carry out their charitable objectives because they wanted the Hawarden Fund to exist in perpetuity for community betterment, not just to finance a few good projects over the next couple of years.”

Charles Horton created a vehicle for current and former residents of Hawarden to give back to their community and the Board wanted to see this effort go full circle with this challenge grant.

BEEF PRODUCTS, INC. SCHOLARSHIP

Application Deadline: March 15

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2015 by Beef Products Inc.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the scholarship program is to assist graduating high school seniors in their pursuit of a post-secondary education at an accredited two-year or four-year college/university.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be graduating seniors from a 30 mile radius of Sioux City, IA to include Nebraska and South Dakota; have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and be ranked in the top 75% of your graduating class; must have participated in part time or full time work during his/her high school experience.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection of recipients is based on such factors as scholastic performance while in high school, school and/or community service activities, and financial need.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: Minimum of $1,000 not to exceed $2000, not renewable.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Application must be received by the March 15 deadline and must include the following:

• High School Certification Form with official high school transcript
